All systems go for the mobility of the future

Faster connections, with more seating capacity, comfort and service – and more environmentally-friendly technology. This is how Go-Ahead plans to revolutionise the railway connection between Munich and Lindau at Elektronetz Allgäu. The new trains will be in operation from December 2021 on. As sole mandated lead arranger, BayernLB has provided EUR 140 million in financing for Go-Ahead’s purchase of 22 electric multiple units, or EMUs.

Go-Ahead was awarded the contract for the Munich-Lindau route, an important connection especially for commuters and tourists, back in 2018 by Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to operate with Elektronetz Allgäu our fourth network in Germany”, said Stefan Krispin, CEO of Go-Ahead Verkehrsgesellschaft Deutschland. The British-owned company had already won a contract for three rail networks in Baden-Württemberg.

For those who travel between Lake Constance and Bavaria, this is good news. Trains on the Munich-Memmingen route will be running hourly rather than every two hours, as is currently the case. Furthermore, an express train, also running every hour, will stop at selected stations up until Memmingen, where it will then make all local stops to Lindau. The nimble EMUs will require a good hour to get from Memmingen to Munich – around half as long as today’s diesel locomotives. Passengers can look forward to more seating capacity during the busiest segment of the route – between Buchloe and Munich – along with such perks as workdesks, charging sockets for mobile devices and WiFi.
